It is completely natural for a slight odor to come from the vagina, due to the presence of both good and bad bacteria (which balance each other out). Strong and unpleasant vaginal odor can occur due to inflammation in genital area of a woman. It is possible that this inflammation may occur due to poor feminine hygiene yet it is actually often the result of an infection around or inside the vagina.
A quite common infection is due to an overgrowth and imbalance of the natural bacteria found in the vagina, which is the cause of bacterial vaginosis (commonly known as BV). Another cause of feminine odor are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), of which there are a few. On rare occasions, a yeast infection can also cause a strong odor. Some not-so-common causes of feminine odor would be a variety of cancers as well as an abnormal entrance between the vagina and rectum (known as rectovaginal fistula)
Now let’s look at in more detail each of the possible causes of feminine odor, common symptoms and some possible treatments.
Causes of Feminine Odor
• Bacterial vaginosis : is a truly a huge yet fairly harmless pain in the neck. If you are still have menstrual cycles, it is very likely you will have a bout of BV sooner or later (if you haven’t already). As mentioned above, BV occurs when there is an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria which causes an imbalance.
Symptoms: Heavier and stronger feminine odor than normal; heavier discharge is also possible; irritation, itching and inflammation are also common symptoms.
Treatment: Although it is not necessary to take an prescription medication, as the body will balance out the bacteria count naturally, it is also a good idea to visit you doctor, who may prescribe for you so as to clear up the issue as soon as possible- this is important so if the prescribed anti-bacterial medication does not alleviate the problem, you and your doctor will know that it may be a more serious genital problem. If not, get rid of your vaginal odor here. It is recommended to avoid products which are marketed as able to make you (feel) more clean and fresh, due to the fact that in reality, such products can actually cause more serious problems.
•Yeast Infection: Another common feminine issue, also caused by an overgrowth of bacteria located in the vagina. Almost all woman of child-birth age will experience a yeast infection at least once in their life.
Symptoms: A strong feminine odor is actually a quite rare occurrence with a yeast infection, but not unheard of. What is more common is a thick, white discharge; a serious yeast infection will result in a discharge that resembles cottage cheese.
Treatment: As with VB, a visit to your doctor and prescribed medication is not necessary, yet there is nothing wrong with visiting your medical care provider. If you are pregnant, you should must visit your doctor. There are also several over-the-counter medications that you can apply, yet it is recommended that you apply these at night, when you are in for the night- application of these products can get messy.
It is important to be aware that if the strong feminine odor persists (especially if you are on medication), to not delay in (re)visiting you doctor. A persistent feminine odor that remains for an extended amount of time may very well be a symptom of a much serious problem such as a STD or even cancer.
